The wedding fair is a great platform and opportunity for any couple who are in the process of planning their wedding finding everything under one roof. It is the right place to get an overview related to the wedding suppliers that are required to organize a beautiful wedding. That also includes your official photographer for the big day.
It is undoubtedly the ideal place where the couple would get a realistic idea of the wedding market at that point in time and what it takes to plan the wedding of your liking. The majority of the service providers in Malta would normally design their best packages and special offers to be launched at a wedding fair. Moreover, weddings fair might be the proper stage where all wedding suppliers compete directly with each other. On the other hand, one should also keep in mind that NOT all the Maltese wedding suppliers are actually present at the fair. Actually, the vast majority are not present at that specific fair. That also includes wedding photographers! On the other hand, such a competitive environment would also provoke a tough competition resulting in the best possible deals for the potential clients that are present. One should also keep in mind that not all the offers at the fair might be that genuine after all. There are marketing and advertising techniques such as attractive slogans, that are obviously designed to attract a customer more than guaranteeing a quality product.
Coming to professional photography a customer should be very cautious when it comes to the selection of the wedding photographer and the digital album. To give a practical example, a professional photographer at a fair could present a variety of photos displayed on a stand which might display a high level of photography though from a “variety of weddings” that a photographer might have covered over the recent years. This does not in any way mean that during the coverage of your wedding, you are going to have the same level of photography guaranteed! If on the other hand, your photographer is displaying a beautiful outstanding album that portrays a high quantity of stunning images from the “same” wedding, then yes, that proves the competence and standards related to that specific photographer.
There are also many other criteria that one should carefully evaluate before the selection of the official photographer to be commissioned for a wedding event. One should therefore carefully evaluate the details of a package, the artistic quality, qualifications of that photographer, efficiency, contract details, reviews, word of mouth recommendation, terms, and of course, the price factor.
There are hundreds of so-called “professional” photographers in the local Maltese market, not to say thousands! Most of them declare themselves as ‘professional wedding photographers’ too. The question would therefore arise, how many of them are actually competent enough to provide the married couple with a professionally designed wedding album? One should rest assured that the vast majority of the so-called wedding photographers would quickly forward the newly-weds with a pen-drive containing hundreds of high-resolution images, most of them still unedited, perhaps a week or two following their big day. They simply grab the money and their commitment stops right there! Then it’s up to the newly-weds to see where they are going to design their digital album and its production to finalize the job. The potential bride and groom should get into these details.
In contrast, there is also substantial number of great artists who really know their job who have the appropriate credentials to rightfully earn the status of professional wedding photographers. Consequently, I would strongly recommend that one should carefully clarify such matters without falling into the trap, by hastily booking their wedding photographic services at the stand during a fair, unless one is already familiar with that specific photo-artist guided. The photographer’s reputation is the proper guideline. If this is the case, then yes, one may proceed to the next important step, by negotiating the best deal possible for his wedding photography package. Here one must decide whether the package should also include a pre-wedding, post-wedding, that ever-important portrait frame at the entrance of the venue, drone filming, images to be delivered on a pen-drive or a digital album, the size of the album, wedding footage as a full version and possibly a ‘short version’ too, etc.
Another interesting consideration, the Maltese wedding industry provides a number of fully trained wedding organizers who are a strong asset during the process of a local wedding. They are a great asset to the official photographer during a wedding. On the other hand, it is also a reality that other so-called organizers are more after earning a commission from the photographer that they had recommended to the couple, more than the latter’s professionalism! The logical option is to ensure that the potential bride and groom should directly commission their photographer more than taking recommendations from third parties that might have a conflict of interest in this respect. Nowadays it is a rather simple process to get online and browse directly into the appropriate websites that are strictly related to wedding photography.
In any case that the newly-weds are also interested in filming their wedding through a professional videographer, then I would recommend that the wedding photography package would also include the filming contractor. The videographer would ideally be part of the photographer’s team. In other words, the photographer and the videographer must be fully compatible with each other to work smoothly together. This would ensure efficiency and guarantee that the newly-weds would not end up repeating the same action twice wasting precious time on their big day. One should keep in mind that the rigid timeframe during the process of a wedding is rather tight. An appeal to the ‘enthusiastic photographer’. Please keep in mind that in this day and age, the organization of a wedding event costs a lot of money, going into thousands of euros, probably earned by the couple through their hardship over a substantial period of time. Consequently, this is not simply a case that an enthusiastic photographer should gamble with a ‘once in a lifetime’ event, simple to earn some extra cash. One should be either fully qualified and competent in the profession, or simply keep away from it!
Wedding photography is a very serious business. It just cannot go the wrong way. Professional wedding coverage is a crucial factor It would serve as a living testimony of a very important day in the life of the married couple.
